Introduction
PMEGP is a credit-linked subsidy programme launched by the Government of India with the aim of generating employment opportunities through the establishment of micro-enterprises in the non-farm sector. It combines the forces of credit and subsidy to facilitate the launch of new ventures and the expansion of existing ones.
The scheme aims to generate employment opportunities in rural as well as urban areas of the country through setting up of new self-employment ventures/projects/micro enterprises. Besides, the scheme also seeks to provide continuous and sustainable employment to all segment of traditional and prospective artisans and rural / urban unemployed youth in the country, so as to help arrest migration of rural youth to urban areas. The scheme also focuses to increase the wage earning capacity of artisans and contribute to increase in the growth rate of rural and urban employment.
Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)
The Scheme is implemented by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), as the nodal agency at the National level. At the State level, the Scheme is implemented through State KVIC Directorates, State Khadi and Village Industries Boards (KVIBs) and District Industries Centres (DICs) and banks.
The maximum cost of the project/ unit admissible under manufacturing sector is Rs.50 lakh and under business/service sector is Rs.20 Lakh.
Popularity of PMEGP
Only new projects are considered for sanction under PMEGP. Any individual, above 18 years of age is eligible under the scheme. Since inception in 2008-09 till 31.12.2022, a total of about 8.37 lakh micro enterprises have been assisted with a margin money subsidy of Rs 20,775 crore providing employment to an estimated 68 lakh persons. Out of the total units set up under PMEGP, around 80% are under rural areas and around 20% under urban areas. More than 50% units belong to women, SC and STs. Around 15% units are setup in Aspirational Districts.
